The history of Namibia’s labour movement is built on the courage and commitment of individuals who stood up for workers’ rights long before independence became a reality. One such individual is Sakaria Simon, our Namibian Hero for the month of May.

Mr. Simon joined the trade union movement in 1984, at a time when organising workers required bravery, resilience, and a deep belief in justice. This was not an easy path, but it was one he chose with conviction, understanding the importance of collective action and worker representation during a critical period in Namibia’s history.

Before independence, he became one of the first shop stewards for the Namibian Food and Allied Workers Union (NAFAU). In this role, he acted as a voice for workers on the ground, advocating for fair treatment, dignity, and better working conditions. His involvement placed him among the pioneers who helped lay the foundation for organised labour in the country.

Beyond trade union work, Mr. Simon was also politically active. He served as a member of the Central Committee of the SWAPO Party Youth League, contributing to youth mobilisation and political education during a defining era for Namibia. His engagement reflected a strong belief that workers’ rights and political freedom are deeply connected.

A significant moment in his journey was attending the first May Day ever held in Namibia in 1988 in Tsumeb. This historic event symbolised solidarity, resistance, and hope for workers across the country, and Mr. Simon was there to witness and be part of that legacy.

Away from activism and leadership, Mr. Simon has a softer, lesser-known side. Baking bread is one of his hidden talents, a reminder that behind every activist and leader is a human being with simple passions and skills that bring joy to everyday life.

One of the key figures who inspired him to join the trade union movement was the late John Pandeni. Pandeni’s courage and dedication left a lasting impression on Mr. Simon and helped shape his commitment to fighting for workers’ rights and social justice.

Mr. Sakaria Simon’s story is one of service, sacrifice, and quiet strength. We honour him for his contribution to Namibia’s labour movement and for playing his part in shaping a fairer and more just society. His journey reminds us that progress is built by ordinary people who choose to stand up when it matters most.

Honouring the Namibians whose stories continue to shape our nation.
