Some names in Namibia’s history continue to echo long after their time, not because of titles, but because of the values they stood for. For the month of June, we honour the late Anton Lubowski, a man whose life was defined by courage, justice, and an unwavering commitment to freedom.

Anton Lubowski was a fearless anti-apartheid activist and a strong advocate for social justice. At a time when standing against oppression came with real danger, he chose principle over comfort. His activism placed him firmly on the side of equality, dignity, and human rights for all Namibians.

Beyond politics and activism, Lubowski was also a first-class rugby player. On the field, he demonstrated discipline, teamwork, and excellence, qualities that mirrored his character off the field. His love for sport showed another side of a man often remembered only for his political courage.

His commitment to human rights did not go unnoticed internationally. Anton Lubowski received the Austrian Bruno Kreisky Prize for his achievements in human rights. This recognition reflected the global impact of his work and the respect he earned for standing up against injustice.

Politically, he was a dedicated member of the SWAPO. In 1989, during a critical moment in Namibia’s transition to independence, he became the Deputy Director of Finance and Administration of the SWAPO Election Directorate. This role placed him at the heart of the process that helped guide the country toward its first democratic elections.

He also served as the Secretary of Finance and Administration for the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW). Through this position, he worked closely with workers and trade unions, reinforcing his belief that political freedom and workers’ rights are inseparable.

Anton Lubowski’s legacy continues to live on through knowledge and dialogue. Every year in September, the University of Stellenbosch hosts a memorial lecture in his honour. This ongoing tribute ensures that his ideas, sacrifices, and commitment to justice remain part of contemporary conversations.

The late Anton Lubowski represents a rare kind of bravery, one that crosses racial, political, and social boundaries. As our June Namibian Hero, we remember him not only for what he stood against, but for what he stood for: justice, equality, and a free Namibia.

Honouring those whose courage continues to shape our democracy and conscience.
